Towards the cease of the show's original run, it spawned one feature length theatrical film He-Man and She-Ra: The Secret of the Sword , which served as the introduction for the show'south spinoff literal sister series She-Ra: Princess of Power. Reruns continued to air in syndication until 1988, at which point USA Network bought the rights to the serial. The states aired He-Man until September 1990. The success of the toy-based show in syndication profoundly influenced other animation houses to produce half-60 minutes "cartoon commercials", and considerably inverse the syndicated cartoon market. [4]

The franchise has been adapted many times in comic book and comic strip form, and a alive-activeness movie was produced in 1987. Production history [ edit ]

The Mattel visitor released the original He-Man action effigy in 1982; the franchise backstory was developed by the Filmation animation studio. On i December 1982, Michael Halperin wrote a "serial bible". [6] Some time later, both firms pitched the idea to the ABC network, who turned information technology down. The resulting serial, He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, debuted through barter syndication in September 1983, [nb ane] and became the first syndicated show to be based on a toy. By 1984, it was seen on 120 U.S. stations and in more than 30 countries., [7] By mid-1985, it was airing on 152 stations across the U.S., and was the almost popular syndicated program with children 2-11 with a 10.ix rating in that demographic. [8]

Despite the express blitheness techniques that were used to produce the serial, He-Man was notable for breaking the boundaries of censorship that had severely restricted the narrative telescopic of children'due south Tv set programming in the 1970s. For the commencement time since Ruby-Spears's Thundarr the Barbarian , a cartoon series could feature a muscular superhero who was actually allowed to hit people (although he more than typically used wrestling-style moves rather than really punching enemies), though he all the same could not apply his sword often; by and large He-Man opted to pick up his opponents and toss them away rather than striking them. The cartoon was controversial in that it was produced in connexion with marketing a line of toys; advert to children was itself controversial during this period. [nine] In the Uk, advertising regulations forbade commercials for He-Human toys to accompany the program itself. In similar mode to other shows at the fourth dimension, notably G.I. Joe , an endeavour to mitigate the negative publicity generated by this controversy was made by including a "life lesson" or "moral of the story" at the stop of each episode. This moral was usually direct tied to the action or cardinal theme of that episode. [10] [11] [12]

The testify was and then successful that it spawned a spin-off series, She-Ra: Princess of Ability , following the adventures of He-Man's sister, Princess Adora. [13] Mattel'south subsequent attempts to relaunch the He-Man toy line also led to the short-lived sequel series The New Adventures of He-Homo in the early 1990s, and an update of the franchise for a contemporary audience in 2002. [14]

It is besides noted for featuring early on script-writing work from J. Michael Straczynski, afterwards the creator of Babylon v ; Paul Dini and Brynne Stephens, both of whom who would become on to write acclaimed episodes of Batman: The Animated Series ; Beast Wars story editor Larry DiTillio; and David Wise, later on the caput-writer of the TV version of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and The Real Ghostbusters . [fifteen] In 2016, a new episode of He-Human was released. [xvi]
